Learning

We aim for all our children to develop a love of learning and opportunities are provided through quality teaching, for all children to succeed.

The school’s curriculum is broad and rich and provides challenge for all children. It is delivered using a variety of methods and often through a thematic approach. Our aim is to make learning exciting and meaningful for our children.

We try to take opportunities to take learning beyond the classroom using the school grounds, village and places of educational interest, and visitors are invited into school to enhance children’s learning. Class 4 also experience residential visits, to Whitby as part of the geography curriculum and an activity based trip as part of the outdoor pursuits PE curriculum.

Academic achievement is of a high standard and we have high expectations of all our learners in the core subjects, while providing a much wider curriculum in which they can achieve.

Teaching is planned to address children’s different learning styles and is through active participation, discussion and hands on experiences. Effective learning encourages independence, motivation, problem solving, reflection, resilience, resourcefulness, social skills, enjoyment in learning and ultimately lifelong learning.

We hold themed days and weeks throughout the year to promote and inspire different areas of learning, for example Arts and History weeks and Business Enterprise week, which motivate children to work together and make learning memorable.

The school offers a wide range of extra curricular activities both during and after school. The activities cover gardening, recorders, singing, ICT, cooking, craft and story clubs as well as many different sporting activities.

The phonics scheme we use is letters and sounds.

The reading scheme we use is Jelly and Bean and Oxford Reading Tree.
